This practice was given as a “last resort” for when life isn’t working. It’s a meditation on “Wahe Guru Wahe Jio,” the mantra for ecstasy. “Wahe Guru” is said to impart the experience of the divine, and to take us from darkness to light. When we’re down and depressed, when we’re unable to give, when we’ve lost sight of the bigger picture, this practice helps bring us back.
The meditation brings relaxation, strength, and mental clarity. The mantra works to dissolve anger, negativity, and to position ourselves for victory and the right to excel.
If you are unable to complete the 8 repetitions on one breath, do what you can, and gradually build your capacity.
The Practice
Posture: Sit in Easy Pose with the spine straight. Have the hands in the lap, palms up, right hand resting in left, thumb tips touching.
Eye Focus: Eyes are closed.
Mantra: Chant the Wahe Guru Wahe Jio mantra 8 times on one breath. Chant in a monotone:
Whaa-Hay Guroo Whaa-Hay Guroo Whaa-Hay Guroo Whaa-Hay Jee-0
Breathe very deeply in order to complete the cycle, which will take approximately 45 seconds. Release the breath very slowly as you chant. If at first the breath doesn’t hold for the full 8 repetitions, stop, breathe, and begin again. Build up your capacity.
Start with 11 minutes maximum. Gradually increase to 22 minutes, then 33 minutes.
Comments:
The original teaching from Yogi Bhajan says that in chanting this mantra, the tongue stimulates the 32nd meridian, known as the Christ meridian in the West and as Sattvica Buddha Bindh in the East. This is said to trigger the relaxation response via the thalamus gland, altering our emotional state.
