Moon Centers: A Complete Guide to Women’s Cycles

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

The moment you are born the stars align in a specific way, which gives you special characteristics. These characteristics can be deeply understood through various Zodiacs, different systems of Astrology, or the Tantric Numerology we have in Kundalini Yoga. And for women, there’s something uniquely special that empowers you with a deeper understanding of yourself – the Moon Centers.

The Moon Centers are probably the most relevant piece of technology that Yogi Bhajan gave to understand your nature as a woman.

A family of women under the moon

What are Moon Centers?

The 11 Moon Centers are specific areas of a woman’s body that influence her emotions, mood, and behavior. These centers are not related to menstrual or lunar cycles but follow a unique cycle, with each center being active for approximately 2.5 days.

A woman’s Moon Centers are always in constant transformation. The universe has given you this gift as a woman to experience these cycles inside yourself. You can use this information to your advantage if you understand your personal Moon Centers cycle.

Why doesn’t a woman’s Moon Center cycle stay the same all the time?

For a woman, it would be a dream if her moods were not so variable. Having a constant state of emotions would be nice – but it’s impossible because a woman’s nature is to flow and change.

Nature has certain rules and rhythms, and it is very helpful to understand them because they can facilitate things in your life—a lot!

One law is that energy is constantly moving and transforming, and matter is always moving. Nothing in the universe is static. Even when we try to lock good things in place, we find it’s just not possible. For example, you have a wonderful day or you have an awesome experience, but when you try to duplicate it a second time, it just doesn’t feel the same.

That is because everything around us moves so much day to day. Just meditate on the fact that this earth rotates at approximately 700 miles per hour!

So, to think that on this earth you can force things to stay the same is nonsense. You need to move and flow like energy does. The sooner you realize this, the faster you can adapt and play the game of life on a different level.

And a woman has a unique gift that helps her achieve the ability to be, to flow and to create…

The 11 Moon Centers

Now I am explaining to you the eleven sides of the moon in a woman. The most important of all is her hair. Hair is most important to a woman. Second thing is cheeks. They call the peak of the cheek. Peak of the cheek. Third is the lips. Fourth is the sunspot of the earlobes. Fifth is the back of the neck. Sixth is the breasts. Seventh alternates: either it can be the area around the belly button or it can be the back of the spine. Eighth is the inner thigh. Ninth is the eyebrows, they are very sensitive. When a woman’s moon is in her eyebrows, all you have to do is touch it like this, and she melts like ice cream.

I am telling you this order of the Moon Centers in sensitivity.

Tenth is the clitoris. And the eleventh is the membrane in the vagina.

Now these are the eleven places where the moon moves from her chin spot as a moon throbbing they call it, moon throbbing. It moves from her chin and it goes this way and that. The order varies with every woman, but it does move through all these centers.

That is your Moon Cycle. See? Your moon remains two and a half days at each center. It changes within two and a half days.

– Yogi Bhajan, Library of Teachings

The list of Moon Centers in a woman’s body:

  1. Hair
  2. Cheeks (Peak of the Cheek)
  3. Lips
  4. Earlobes (Sunspot)
  5. Back of the Neck
  6. Breasts
  7. Belly button Area or Back Spine (Alternatively)
  8. Inner Thighs
  9. Eyebrows
  10. Clitoris
  11. Membrane in the Vagina

How the Cycle Works

Each Moon Center remains active for about 2.5 days before the energy shifts to the next center. The 2.5 day duration at each center takes you through the 11 Moon Centers in about 28 days.

Each woman has a different cycle. Meaning one woman might go from the navel to the inner thighs and then to the lips and so on, while another woman can move from her breasts to her cheeks and to the membrane of the vagina, and so on.

Different stages of the moon

Does a woman’s Moon Center cycle ever change?

In general, no, it does not. But if a woman goes through a traumatic event which shocks her system her cycle can change.

How does each Moon center influence you?

  • Hairline: gives you clarity and intuition.
  • Cheeks: gives you victory in your communication.
  • Lips: related to communication skills.
  • Earlobes: connected to intelligence and ethics.
  • Back of the neck: reflects romantic and sentimental feelings.
  • Breasts: represents compassion and nurturing tendencies.
  • Belly button or Spine: concerns security and insecurity.
  • Inner thighs: deals with coordination and energy.
  • Eyebrows: tied to imagination and creativity.
  • Clitoris: involves charm and sociability.
  • Membrane in the vagina: pertains to depth and sharing.

What are the practical implications of knowing your own cycle?

How practical is all this? How does knowing your own Moon Centers cycle help you on a day-to-day basis? Let’s see some examples:

Emotional Awareness and Management

By knowing that the Moon Centers influence your emotional state and that you will shift every 2.5 days, you can anticipate periods of increased sensitivity or creativity. For instance, if you know that your emotional peaks occur when the moon is in your cheeks, you can prepare for these days by practicing extra self-care and avoiding stressful situations.

Benefit: This awareness helps in managing mood swings and reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed by emotions.

Better Planning and Productivity

If your Moon Center influence is in your lips, your communication skills are active, so it’s a good time to schedule important meetings, presentations, or social events. Conversely, if your moon is in a center that makes you feel introspective, you might plan to work on tasks that require deep concentration or solitary work.

Benefit: Aligning your activities with your Moon Cycle can enhance productivity and ensure that you perform tasks when you are most suited for them emotionally and mentally.

Improved Relationships

Understanding when you are more likely to be nurturing (e.g. when the moon is in your breasts) can help your relationships. You can inform close ones about your cycle, so they understand your behavior better and provide appropriate support when you need it.

Benefit: This leads to more harmonious relationships, as both you and your loved ones can navigate emotional highs and lows in a gracious way, so you can expand and feel happy with yourself.

Self-Compassion and Healing

Recognizing times when you are most vulnerable (e.g., when the moon is in the navel area) allows you to practice self-compassion. You might avoid making major decisions or engaging in confrontational discussions during these periods. You can allow yourself to rest and renew.

Benefit: This self-care and emotional healing honors your natural cycles and avoids unnecessary stress.

Enhanced Creativity and Problem Solving

When the moon is in the eyebrows, your imagination and creativity increases, so you can plan to engage in creative projects or brainstorming sessions.

Benefit: Utilizing these peak creative times can lead to more innovative solutions and artistic expressions. It also allows you to have the vision and perspective to see the big picture.

Health and Wellness

Aligning physical activities such as yoga or meditation with your Moon Centers can enhance their effectiveness. For instance, practicing calming meditations when the moon is in a center associated with high emotional intensity can help balance your mood.

Benefit: Tuning your fitness routines to your emotional needs supports your overall health and wellness.

How do you discover your Moon Center’s personal cycle?

Every woman has her own personal cycle, and because it is a cycle, a rhythm, it flows exactly as the seasons flow. After every Winter comes Spring, followed by Summer and then Fall – it never varies. Just so, if you are in your cheeks, and then you move to your navel, and then to your lips, every cycle you will flow in that same order. You have your own unique sequence, and it is a wonderful gift to know the rhythm of your cycle and use it in your favor.

A young woman holds the full moon in her hands

To learn your own cycle, you can:

Track your moods to gain a thorough understanding of each of your Moon Centers. Observe the patterns that repeat and over time you will discover your personal cycle.
Or
Use a pendulum. This requires more skill to do correctly, but is the fastest way to understand your own Moon Center cycle.

Balancing and Harmonizing Your Moon Centers

After discovering your cycle, one of the key things you will be able to do is learn to balance them and harmonize your challenging centers.

Each woman, because of her life story, could have one or more especially challenging Moon Centers. Kundalini Yoga will come in handy to help you navigate your moods and your environment during those particular days. Your Moon Centers are a key element in your Kundalini Yoga practice.

Also, your diet as always plays an important role in how you feel and experience the influence of each cycle.

As a woman, you have the blessing to discover how your moods and skill sets vary during the course of your cycle, and how to work with your Moon Centers to your best advantage.

  1. Thank you very much for your insight. I am a bit troubled since I have always thought that there is a moon center at the chin. And that this is also a center that men have?

    • Sat Nam and blessings Susanna, Thank you for your question. Is a very common question about the Moon Centers. We have the moon center on the chin, the big differences is that it is kind like the center of the clock, and the other 11 moon centers are the “numbers on the clock” So, the moon centers that will bring up this emotions and moods will be the moon centers that are through out the body, not the moon center of the chin.
Hope that this explain a little bit more.

  2. I’m a new learner of the Moon lunar cycles and knew nothing about the 11 centers (reminds me of the 10 Bodies + Command Center) until today. Thank You!

    • Sat Nam Anita, Wahe Guru! This is a very wonderful and important subject in which every woman needs to reflect, experience and expand. 6.

    • Sat Nam and blessings Margret, I am sorry that you couldn´t find useful this guide. One practical thing that you can do, is to develop a journal to help you understand the specific way in which your cycle manifest. Every woman is different and to deeply understand how the nipples, the hairline etc manifest in you is something practical and profound in your journey.

  10. You did a eautiful job with this. I studied first-hand with Yogi Bjajan about the Moon Centers. I wrote a book years ago called, The Art of Making Sex Sacred. One full chapter is on the 11 Moon Center, which also includes how to use a pendulum to find them…which can be very helpful. There a couple of detail you perhaps didn’t know but they were omitted. I hope it is ok for me to add some info here. 1. When in Thighs, one is v) organized and gets things done…even makes lists. What ever one was putting off during the month gets done then. 2. It is not Hair but Hairline, like your arcline. When it is here, the woman is the most like her essence, the best of herself and the most neutral…the best time to give a presentation or anything. 3. Lips is a time she can be the most expressive but it can be negative communication too, so she has to
be careful and aware of her speech. 4. As you said, when in Eyebrows she is illusionary and creative, a good time to write a poem, but not make decisions. Wait for Hairline or Thighs.
    5. Earlobes, is a time she is righteous so a good time to fight for a cause, but she has to watch out about being critical and judgmental. 6. Navel – she can be insecure so a good time to do Stretch Pose and BOF. 7. Checks – as you said, it is a highly emotional time
If Navel and Cheeks follow one another, she has to be very careful. Just take long walk in nature, Lol. 8. Clitoris is a time she may be very social…a good time to give a party. 9. Vagina she may be very internal…a good time to reflect and meditate. 10. Neck- she is romantic. 11. Breastsl)))p l) p, as you said she will be Compassionate.
.a good time to visit a sick friend or listen to someone who needs to talk. Knowing one’s Moon Centers can enhance sex, especially when in breasts, lips, neck, clitoris or vagina. I hope this was helpful. Many blessings in our exploring our fascinating Moon Centers.
    .

You did a wonderful job here but omitted some things. 1. It is Hairline, our arcline. It is the time we are the best of ourselves
    2. Eyebrows, as you said, when we are illusionary and a good time to.imagine. 3. Earlobes, we are righteous but can be critical and judgmental. 4. Lips, ad you said we can communicate well…but we can also destroy with harsh words, so.must be careful. 5. Neck – very romantic. 6. Breasts – Compassionate
..a good time to visit a sick friend or listen to another who needs to talk. 7. Cheeks – as you said, emotional…must be careful, but with meditation, can use sensitivity to pay attention. Not a time for decisions. Wait for Thighs or Hairline. 8. Navel – our most insecure if our core is weak. If too strong can be overpowering. If Navel and Cheeks follow one another,we have to be extra aware. 9. Thighs’ we are the most organized and get things done
    10. Clitoris- social…give a party. 11. Vagina – internal
..be reflective and quiet…meditate. paying attention to our Moon Centers can enhance sex, especially when at Breasts, Lips, Vagina. Bless us all in our exploration of.our Moon Centers
And we don’t have chin as one
Men do…that’s why it is recommended for them to cover it up with hair, as it is a place of emotions and not being steady. Would be interesting to ask them if they feel a difference
    Much ❤️
    ..although

    • Sat Nam Dear Jivan Joti Kaur, thank you so much for your time and how you share this knowledge. Yes, this is just an excerpt of the book so we can share a bit and bring this awareness and love for this important part of the teachings on women. So happy that you read it. I have your book in my home, love it.
      Wahe Guru!
      Sat Bachan Kaur

  11. I was wondering how the moon centers are related to astrological signs and changes and how they change with numerology.
    Sat nam

    • Sat Nam and blessings Sevak Raj Singh, thank you for this question. As We Are One, everything is related, and at the same time and for the purpose of understand the essence and practical use of the Moon Centers, we can say that every women have this Moon centers and you can see them as a cycle that we travel every 27 and a half days. We have this 11 moon centers ( 12 if we count the chin) and every woman in the world have them. They will express in a subtle different way in every one of us, the concept is the same.
      Wahe Guru
      Sat Bachan Kaur

  12. What about post menopausal women?

    • Sat Nam Helen,
Thank you for this question, in post menopausal women the moon centers will still be active, and the expression of the moods and emotions will be steadier.
The moon centers are with a woman through her whole life.
      Wahe Guru
      Sat Bachan Kaur

      Muchas bendiciones
      Sat Bachan Kaur

  14. Hi, great information fo r shared! Thank you
I am familiar with the moon centers. Does this apply for a woman in menopause whose cycle has ended ?

    • Sat Nam and blessings Paula, Thank you for your commnent, and yes in that stage of life, the expression of the moon centers is more subtle and balanced. Women as their reach this inner wisdom that age provide, does not have this intense expression of the moon centers. Although they are still active giving you a smooth flavour of life.
      Wahe Guru
      Sat Bachan Kaur

  15. Muy interesada en saber más

    • Sat Nam Bachan Shakti Kaur, es una enseñanza y experiencia Ăşnica poder adentrarnos en este universo de los puntos lunares.

      • Sat Nam Sat Bachan Kaur,
Thank you for sharing your comment.

  16. Sat Nam, Dearest Sat Bachan Kaur,

Yes, I believe it’s you—the maker of that delicious spice mix! We spent time years ago under the sun, moon and stars in New Mexico, sharing our histories and love for moon center wisdom in the mini prenatal/postnatal training retreat. We laughed, dreamed, made meals, crafted and helped prepare a mama and papa for their baby’s arrival.

Those times together left an imprint on me, especially our conversations about cycles, pregnancy, and feeding. I continue working with the moon centers, finding practical ways to expand the knowledge for women and mothers, especially in the subtle, elusive realms of feeding, body signals, and nurturing.

I’m excited to reconnect here!, it’s wonderful how you are bringing more visibility to these teachings. The moon centers carry a quiet power this cyclical wisdom I believe we are reclaiming now. These powerful skills to turn or at least move with our tides especially during unstable or unsustainable times.

Looking forward to sharing more as we continue supporting mamas and babies on this journey.

    With love, Jules

    • Sat Nam Julee, Thank you for sharing your comment. I have forwarded it to Sat Bachan Kaur.

    • Sat Nam and blessings Jules,
Wahe Guru, how beautiful it is to remember that time. It was a very special trip for us, and sharing the teachings on women and open the space to understand the importance to support mothers in their new journey. Thank you so much for your blessings, love and hugs from Chile.

  18. Thank you for bringing new life and new insights to the Moon Centers, Sat Bachan. Back in the ’80’s we learned about our Moon Centers at Ladies Camp and at Women Gatherings, called “Peanut Hours.” I blessed my marriage and our love life around these beautiful teachings about sacred sex and Moon Centers. Thank you, Jiwan Jodi for your beautiful book.
It was incredibly helpful to understand my moon center cycles and how best to communicate about important things (or to wait until I was in powerful place in my moon cycle) with my husband in our lives.
But I love what you’re doing. You have brought new excitement and passion to understanding our beauty, vulnerability, and tremendous sensitivity as women. It has been so fun to read your wisdom and inspiring emails. It’s a whole new generation of global yoga students, daughters, and our female friends, who need to more deeply understand our cycles, our power, our intuition, and deeply sensitive nature as women. Thank you. Blessings to all women!

  19. Infinite blessings for this beautiful guide
