Psyche of the Mother Meditation

This is a beautiful meditation for invoking the psyche of the Mother was given by Yogi Bhajan at KWTC (Khalsa Women’s Training Camp) on July 11, 1986.  It can be practiced regardless of whether you have biological children.

“….I am asking you to give yourself a chance. Just feel that you are creative. It is called mother psyche. And you know what mother psyche can do? It can shield you, it can protect you, it can bring you success, it can bring you opportunity…” ~ Yogi Bhajan

Experience what a Mother does. Imagine there’s a baby cradled in your arms. With each inhale you are caring for it. Each time you inhale the cradle rises up and down very gently. Don’t feel shy. It is very accurate.

Rakhe Rakhanhar is a protection mantra that realigns the mind with the knowledge that everywhere, God is at work. In meditating on this mantra, we release hostility, resentments, and judgments, calling forth the well-being of all. As the Mother would. No matter what

If you are new to this mantra, it may help to see it written before beginning your practice. Your breath will coordinate with the lines of the mantra, so before you start, you should know where the lines begin and end.

Posture: Sit in Easy Pose with a straight spine.
Mudra: Make a cradle with your arms. The left arm is underneath the right, and the left hand holds the right elbow. The right hand is relaxed and flat against the body. On each stroke of the inhale, the arms lift up and down slightly and very gently, as though you are bouncing a baby.

Breath & Mantra: Listen to the mantra Rakhe Rakhanhaar. Inhale in 8 strokes on the first line of the mantra, exhale in one long stroke through the nose on the second line of the mantra. Continue in this way, alternating the 8-stroke inhalation and the long exhalation with the lines of the mantra.

Transliteration of the Mantra:

  • Rakhay rakhanhaar aap ubaarian
  • Gur kee pairee paa-eh kaaj savaarian
  • Hoaa aap dayaal manho na visaarian
  • Saadhjanaa kai sang bhavjal taarian
  • Saakat nindak dusht khin maa-eh bidaarian
  • Tissaahib kee tayk naanak manai maa-eh
  • Jis simrat sukh ho-eh saglay dookhjaa-eh
  • Translation of the Mantra:
  • God Himself is looking out for us,
  • gives us the light and takes care of our affairs.
  • God is merciful and never forgets us.
  • God guides us, giving us good people to help us.
  • God does not allow hurt to come to us.
  • I will take comfort in the thought of God.
  • When I remember God, I feel peaceful and happy and all my pain departs.

Comments:

These are the words of Guru Arjan, the 5th Sikh Guru, and are for complete protection. It is from the Sikh evening prayer (Rehiras), which adds energy to one’s being, and helps when you are physically weak or have limited wealth. It is a victory song which allows us to be guided by God’s graceful and merciful hand. It does away with the obstacles to fulfilling one’s destiny.

Kundalini is sometimes referred to as the Mother Power, or Adi Shakti. While the philosophy of Kundalini Yoga recognizes the inherent unity in all of Creation, it also recognizes the polarities of masculine and feminine, solar and lunar, yin and yang.

The Mother Power relates to the divine feminine and the creative aspect of the Universe. It embodies the all powerful force of unconditional love. This practice is a prayer, that we may revive the spirit of the Divine Mother and treat ourselves and one another with kindness, compassion, and care.
